Petrus

disco - boogie - breaks - house

DJ Petrus started deejaying under the name BigHed in 1998. Together with friends M. Vilenius and kReal he founded J-Funk, a collective of DJ's living in and around Jyväskylä Finland.

In 2000, Petrus moved to Helsinki and often found himself playing records in places like Jump Inn, Soda, Kerma, Labyrinth and We Got Beef. His blend of funk, disco, breaks and house found quite a few admirers in the Finnish capital, and Petrus soon became friends with some of the biggest names in the Helsinki club scene, such as the nine2five crew.

For the last few years, Petrus has kept playing at several venues in Helsinki and Jyväskylä as well as perfecting his radio host skills with nine2five guru DJ Goose every second tuesday for the reputable Bassoradio club music station. Also watch out for the wild Vinylo nights with Petrus and friends at Jyväskylä's bar Vakiopaine!

M. Vilenius

hip hop - jamaican - soul - jungle - downtempo

Being a music enthusiast all his life and after trying to learn to play a couple of instruments (including, God forbid, an accordion) and failing miserably, he was introduced to DJing by a couple of friends around 1993-1994.

Noticing that he's better in selecting good music than creating it, he decided to change his then favourite guitar to turntables, thus relieving the world of another talentless wanna-be rock star. Even though he started DJing with jungle and hip hop, M. Vilenius has always enjoyed playing and listening to a wide variety of music: jazz, funk, soul, hip hop, occasional old jungle tune or two, downtempo, indie pop, Jamaican tunes from old rock steady to latest dancehall. Even some punk, grunge and metal every now and then.

Born and raised in Tampere he moved to Jyvaskyla in 1994 and hooked up with kReal and Petrus to found J-Funk and started to spin under the name "Gimmix" in various parties. Currently he's a post-graduate student living in Tokyo, diggin crates and looking for places to spin at.

Chris Robin

drum'n'bass - jungle - breaks - downtempo - jazzy grooves - trip hop

Chris has been DJ'ing since 1999 and became a member of the J-Funk crew in 2000, when he was invited to spin in the soon-to-be legendary Club Vinylo at Jyväskylä's Vakiopaine. In 2001 Chris moved briefly to Helsinki, where he played in venues such as Jump-Inn and the internationally acknowledged Freeform drum'n bass club at Club Kerma.

In 2002 Chris moved to Funchal, Portugal, where he began infusing some completely new sounds of drum'n bass and breaks into the local party scene. Resident DJ at the top night clubs Monge and Bar Do Mar, he brought on his exotic northern vibe and became the first proper drum'n bass DJ on the island. Chris's performances were broadcast on the local TV and radio shows, while one of the coolest clubs in Portugal, Club Marginal, hosted his drum'n bass club.

The year 2004 saw Chris return to Finland to begin his studies in music management, and he then met the Usva crew, known for organizing the only drum'n bass night in Jyväskylä, tellingly called Wake-Up!. This was the beginning of the J-Funk/Usva collaboration, and Chris has since become an integral part of the Wake-Up! team, both as a promoter and a DJ.

In 2005 Chris found himself in the city of High Wycombe (UK) and ended up staying for a year. There he played in the Filth and Fire drum 'n bass nights, supporting DJs such as Sappo (1xtra), The Prophet (Filth) and EPOC Live.

During the last couple of years Chris has been promoting numerous events in Jyväskylä, such as Vinylo, Wake-Up!, Maanantai-Klubi, Hip Hop Piknik in the Lounaispuisto park, plus the annual For Funk's Sake! club festival in Jazz Bar to boot.

In other words, Chris Robin is one seriously hip cat. Follow his whirlwind of a life with a little help from the J-Funk site!

jell-o

hip hop - disco - boogie - soul

Jell-O started DJ:ing somewhere around 2000 while living and studying in Kuopio. After playing an occasional gig here and there around the city and noticing the lack of decent clubs, Jell-O and a couple of his friends started a club night called "Sawo" at K-Klubi. It was mainly about hip hop then, with a touch of downtempo, reggae and soul/funk sounds. The club didn't last too long though because most of the guys soon moved away from Kuopio.

K-Klubi was the place where Jell-O and J-Funk also met for the first time and noticed they shared similar musical interests. One thing lead to another and Jell-O started DJ'ing regularly with the J-Funk guys. It's 2007 now and music has never sounded so good.

j-funk

Helsinki, Tokyo, Jyväskylä

J-Funk is a collective of DJ's living, drinking and playing around Finland and abroad. J-Funk was born in the student town of Jyväskylä, Finland in 1998. M. Vilenius, kReal and Petrus found out they shared a love of quality underground club music. Funk, soul, jazz, hip hop, jamaican sounds, disco and broken beats tickled their fancy so much they had to start spreading the word.

The word began to spread in wild and fantastic nights called Vinylo. There was only one rule and one common denominator: always play good music regardless of genre. Alas, a tough electro workout could be followed by a vintage jazz anthem by Ella Fitzgerald; a chilly downtempo number was interrupted by gangsta rap onslaught.

Fast forward to early 2007: Vinylo is alive and well, creeping from the cellars of the famous bar Vakiopaine in Jyväskylä, converting hordes of locals and exchange students alike. J-Funk is now M. Vilenius, kReal, Petrus, Chris Robin and Jell-O. M. Vilenius lives in Tokyo, Japan, Petrus in Helsinki, Finland. The J-Funk sound keeps reaching new frontiers. And the livers keep swelling. Ever so slightly...
